Bird Paradise set of stamps
Singapore, 15 November 2023 – In commemoration of Bird Paradise’s grand opening, Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) is launching a set of six stamps featuring some of the park’s most threatened bird species, as well as three aviaries in Bird Paradise on 15 November 2023.
Knobbed Hornbill (1st Local
The Knobbed Hornbill, also known as the Sulawesi Wrinkled Hornbill, is one of the new species being cared for in Bird Paradise. Bird Paradise has the world’s largest living genetic reserve of Hornbills under human care, with over 20 species.
Negros Bleeding-heart ($0.80)
Amongst the rarest bird species in the world, the Negros Bleeding-heart in Singapore’s Bird Paradise forms the only insurance colony outside of the Philippines. Managed by Mandai Wildlife Group, Mandai Nature and Talarak Foundation Inc. this is the first conservation breeding programme for the species outside its native country.
Philippine Eagle ($0.80)
Standing tall at 1m and weighing up to 8kg, the Philippine Eagle is the world’s tallest eagle and one of the largest. Listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, less than 400 pairs remain in the wild. In a first, outside of its native Philippines, this agnificent species calls Bird Paradise, home.
Hong Leong Foundation Crimson Wetlands ($0.90)
Inspired by the coastal wetlands of South America, this aviary is a visual feast of red and pink hues set against the backdrop of a 20m-tall waterfall. This aviary provides unobstructed flight paths for the birds and is the only aviary in Bird Paradise that is entirely beamless. Scarlet Macaws, Roseate Spoonbills, Scarlet Ibises and over 40 vibrantly coloured species take flight, creating a truly unique experience.
Kuok Group Wings of Asia ($1.15)
Replicating Bali’s tranquil bamboo groves and serene rice terraces, the rarest spoonbill species – the Black-faced Spoonbill, and one of the world’s most endangered ducks – the Baer’s Pochard, are among more than 30 species from the largest continent found in this aviary. The aviary features Balinese-style open pavilions, with storks and herons foraging in shallow waters and the majestic Papuan Hornbills.
Nyungwe Forest Heart of Africa ($1.50)
This is the largest aviary in Bird Paradise. It mimics the habitat of the forested valleys of continental Africa, with towering rainforest trees and elevated walkways from where over 80 species of African birds can be observed, including eight different types of Turacos like the charismatic Great Blue Turaco, Livingstone’s Turaco and more.
Sale of stamps
The stamps (valued between $0.51 and $1.50), Pre-cancelled First Day Covers with stamps (S$7.40) and Presentation Packs (S$8.45) will be available at all post offices, philatelic stores, and online at shop.singpost.com from 15 November 2023, while stocks last.
