Singapore, 8 August 2022 – Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) today launched a set of stamps in commemoration of the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment's (MSE) 50th Anniversary this year.
Themed “Building a Green and Resilient Singapore”, the set of stamps is one of many components in MSE’s year-long campaign to celebrate Singapore’s sustainability and environmental journey over the last 50 years. Each stamp is illustrated to depict a key aspect of MSE’s work, i.e., water and food security, climate mitigation and adaptation, public health resilience, as well as zero waste and building a circular economy.
Resilient Water Supply
Through careful planning and continuous innovation, Singapore has built a robust supply of water over the years to meet its needs. 50 years ago, Singapore only had two water sources. Today, it has a diversified and sustainable water supply in what is popularly known as the “Four National Taps”: local catchment water, imported water, NEWater and desalinated water.
Climate Resilience
Singapore has started to experience the impact of climate change: warmer temperatures, rising sea levels and more frequent and intense rainfall. Projects such as the Marina Barrage help us adapt to the impacts of climate change, whilst meeting other needs. For instance, the Marina Barrage not only serves to maintain a source of drinking water for Singapore, it also protects surrounding low-lying areas from floods during heavy rain and offers a venue for recreational activities in the heart of the city.
Food Resilience
Singapore imports more than 90% of its food, making it vulnerable to food supply disruptions. These may arise from time to time due to a variety of factors such as climate change, pandemics and geopolitical events. To strengthen food resilience, Singapore pursues a unique “Three Food Baskets” strategy: diversify import sources, grow local, and grow overseas. Today, some local produce such as eggs, vegetables and fish can already be found in our supermarkets, wet markets, and online retailers.
Resource Resilience
Our planet’s limited resources are depleting at an increasing rate, driven by rising consumption. This in turn causes an increase in waste generation. Semakau Landfill, Singapore’s only landfill, will run out of space by 2035 at the current waste disposal rates, translating to an urgent need to drastically reduce waste generation. This can be achieved by increasing recycling rates, as well as innovating to develop a circular economy and strengthen resource resilience for future generations.
Resilience in Public Health
Ensuring that Singapore residents enjoy a clean and safe living environment requires a multifaceted approach, including vector control, waste management, high cleaning standards, firm enforcement, and public education. This also includes providing residents with safe and hygienic community dining venues, such as hawker centres, which are an integral part of Singapore’s multi-ethnic and diverse society.
Sale of stamps
The stamps (valued between 30 cents and S$1.50), Miniature Sheet (S$2), Pre-cancelled First Day Covers (S$3.40 and S$5.30) and Presentation Packs (S$8.50) go on sale from today (8 August 2022) at all post offices, Philatelic Stores and online at shop.singpost.com, while stocks last.
