SingPost marks 40 years of Singapore-Portugal diplomatic ties with joint stamp issue

 

Singapore, 28 May 2021 – Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) together with CTT Correios de Portugal today launched a joint stamp issue to commemorate 40 years of diplomatic ties between Singapore and Portugal.

 

The two se-tenant stamps feature abstract portrayals of iconic locations found in Singapore and Portugal: Gardens by The Bay on the stamp representing Singapore, and the capital city of Lisbon representing Portugal.

 

Gardens by the Bay is Singapore’s flagship national garden and horticultural attraction, well-loved by local and international visitors alike, showcasing Singapore’s identity as a garden city. Lisbon is one of Europe’s best-known historical cities The capital city by the sea is one of the world’s oldest cities where ancient customs and history intermix with cultural entertainment and hi-tech innovation.

 

The set of stamps is designed by renowned Portuguese graphic designer Mr João Machado. Born in Coimbra, Portugal in 1942, Mr Machado is well known for his marked and unmistakable personal style, characterised by expressive compositions in bright colours, combining geometric and abstract forms, which can be observed in this set of stamps.

 

SingPost Senior Vice President for Post Office Network, Financial Services and Philately, Ms Marjorie Ooi said that the stamps were a refreshing spin on national icons, reflecting the vibrant nature of both countries.

 

“Despite their geographical distance, Singapore and Portugal share a very special friendship over the last 40 years. The robust bilateral ties and collaboration are well represented by the beautiful depiction of both cities, with a modern interpretation depicting the progress both Singapore and Portugal have made over the last 40 years. The joint stamp speaks volumes of the rich history and close ties between the two countries”, said Ms Ooi.

 

The stamps (valued at S$1.40 each), Miniature Sheet (S$3.00), Pre-cancelled First Day Covers (S$4.25 each) and Presentation Packs (S$5.35) is available for sale from today (28 May 2021) at all post offices, philatelic stores and online at shop.singpost.com, while stocks last.
