In the age of GenAI and data-driven everything, the buzz around digital transformation is palpable. It seems like every company, to an extent, is diving headfirst into the digital wave.

Picture this scenario: a day when we can interact with the data, not through a mere static report nor dashboard, but through interactive conversations, powered by GenAI, "Show me the sales volume, month to date", "Give me our top 5 customers", or "Show me the top 5 products with highest profit margins", etc.

Well, guess what? That day has arrived and it is waiting for us to seize it.

Amidst the digital frenzy, let's take a step back and focus on the fundamentals, the bedrock principles that underpin every digital transformation. Even in the digital realm, the answers are often more nuanced than we'd like to admit.

These are the lessons I have gathered along the way, lessons that have been etched into memory through sweat, tears, and yes a good fair share of frustration. But our digital transformation journey does come with laughter too; indeed this makes for a bitter-sweet lesson.

  1. Charting the Course of Change Management

In the vast and often misunderstood enterprise architecture, we tend to forget the most intricate piece of the puzzle - people. Humans are wired to produce diverse responses to constant stimuli, each with their own unique logic hidden deep within.

How is this relevant? Well, our stakeholders hold the key to success. Here are the strategies we should adopt to ensure that our stakeholders remain committed:

    1. Communication, communication, and communication. There is no such thing as over-communication. Lay out the endgame, how the changes will impact their daily life and how it will propel them up the value chain. Reiterate the ""why", "how", "what's in it for you" relentlessly.
    2. Leading by example. In any opportunities, your top three-level of leadership must always be the torchbearers of change, embodying its spirit.
    3. Grass-root empowerment. You cannot rely solely on your leadership. Dive into the grassroots. Identify one or two champions at that level, empower them, and let them be your ambassadors of change. Help them work through their fear. This way, you can sustain the change even when leadership shifts its focus.
  2. Navigating with Laser-sharp Objectives: Finding our North Star

In any large organisation with a storied history, it is easy to get lost in the labyrinth of distractions, the rabbit-hole. There is never a dull moment as everything seems to require immediate attention, where everything is urgent. Amidst this, I recommend identifying your top three (no more, no less) key objectives. In the industry, these often align with:

    1. Customer Experience. We exist because of our customers. Create that brand loyalty so we do not compete in the race to the bottom. Find a niche that will excite your customers.
    2. Operational Excellence. This paves the path for efficiency and effective cost management.
    3. Revenue Growth. Seek opportunities to grow revenue, be it through increased volume, new customer acquisition, or even new revenue streams.

Building an impact and complexities matrix would come in handy. Focus on small wins whenever possible (warning: sometimes it is very difficult to even find small wins).

  3. Embracing Agility: Anticipate the Unexpected

Remember the metaphorical rabbit-hole? We need to be ready for surprises. Plan your sprint but be ready to change. We must always be ready to Adjust, Adapt, and Adopt.

    1. Break it into manageable sizes. This will give you flexibility as you go.
    2. Be receptive towards feedback. It is a gift. If need be, admit that there are better options or decisions. Sometimes, a U-turn may be the best route.

Have fun and embrace change. As we continue our digital transformation journey, we must walk our talk. Be ready to change and most importantly, enjoy the process.

One last thing. It is a Marathon and not a Sprint.

Transformation is not instant nor a quick-fix; it is a journey, a marathon. It demands determination and grit, traits not everyone possesses. Ultimately, it is about embracing change, finding our North Star, and dancing with agility.

What's your transformation story? Share your experiences and let's keep the conversation going.
